SM15 is now closed.  Thank you for Participating!

“Scale is a bouillon cube that can condense and hopefully enrich a concept.” ― Charles LeDray, artist

A small-format artwork is, by default, intimate. It demands close engagement. The delivery of mindful vibrations by controlled and accurate memory of the hand replace wide and gestural marks obtained through body movements. Both physical and psychological spatial relationships are generated by scale. Imagery in small formats tends to operate in metaphoric space”. We enter these space of a small-format work mentally, imaginatively...

SM15 is an open call for artists to celebrate the small format in art. SM15 invites all artists and designers to submit works of art in any media and in any style no larger than 12”x12”x12".

 GUEST JUROR

Margaret Krug is a New York City-based visiual artist, author and educator.  Dedicated to painting and drawing, her fascination with materials and processes grew into mastery of their handling and application. Her vast knowledge on this matter is imprinted on various texts and articles including her beautifully written and illustrated tome An Artist’s Handbook. There is a vastness to Ms. Krug's drawings and painting aswell. Airy, sweeping, open vistas of landscape and fields of feeling. Tenderly and obsessively painted, her landscapes on small panels transform into jewel-like objects to be held and experienced with all senses: a scent of applied-bee’s wax is perceived while the coldness of the dry gesso tingles the skin. Pools and veils of green hues unfold to the eye like turquoises and emeralds to ultimately generate fields of emotional state. And all of this is contained in a small format, which is why we invited Ms. Krug to join to Selection Committee in judging SM15.

Ms. Krug has been recipient of several awards including the Art and Art History Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Nebraska Omaha (2008) and the George D. and Isabella A Brown Traveling Fellowship by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition to her artistic practice, Ms. Krug is currently the Director of the Painting, Drawing, and Art History Program at the Spannocchia Foundation in Italy, and is on the art faculty of Parsons/The New School for Design in New York City. She is a contributing writer for American Artist Magazine. Formerly, she was a Senior Lecturer at the Whitney Museum of American Art and an art professor of painting, materials, and techniques at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work has been widely exhibited, including: AIR Gallery, The Painting Center, The Whiney Museum of American Art, Front Art Space, The National Arts Club, The Window Gallery, The Nix Gallery, and Vlepo Gallery in New York City, and the Art Institute of Chicago, the Nelson-Atkins Museum, The Willa Cather Foundation and elsewhere throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. To see Ms. Krug's work and learn more about her writing, please click here to visit her website.

YouTube, Vimeo, Dropbox, or similar platforms will be acceptable. Effort should be made to eliminate confusion or extraneous information that may interfere with the jury's viewing of the work.
